The Safety Management Council (referred to as SMC) is a distinguished group of safety professionals dedicated to promoting the welfare, professionalism, and safety of Louisiana’s motor carrier industry. Comprised of drivers, safety managers, driver trainers, and safety-focused professionals from all levels of a member organization, SMC brings together those who engage with safety regulations and compliance on a daily basis.

SMC members lead, plan, and staff the Louisiana Truck Driving Championships, serving as the operational backbone of this premier safety and skills competition. From course design and rule enforcement to on-site judging and event operations, the Council ensures the Championships are conducted with the highest standards of fairness, accuracy, and professionalism.

Throughout the year, the SMC also organizes and participates in near-monthly Courtesy Vehicle Inspections. These offer hands-on, real-world safety training opportunities conducted at active state weigh stations across the state. This training is available exclusively through the LMTA. During these inspections, LMTA safety professionals work side by side with law enforcement to inspect vehicles, reinforce compliance, and strengthen collaboration between industry and regulators in an educational, safety-first environment.

In addition to these hands-on initiatives, SMC members benefit from networking opportunities at LMTA events and educational seminars and training sessions focused on regulatory updates, risk management, and emerging safety trends. Through leadership, collaboration, and continuous learning, the Safety Management Council remains a driving force behind Louisiana’s commitment to safe and responsible motor carrier operations.
